Homework

My Me Box
Have your student select and decorate a shoe box (or any kind of container they are in to). You and your student will talk about some items (5-6) they could bring in that represent a bit of who they are and what is important to them. This is what they will fill the box up with. Once the boxes begin coming in 3-4 students will share their boxes with the class. The boxes will come back home as soon as they have had the chance to share. Have fun with this first project.

Read each night for at least 20 minutes.
You and your student will love reading together each night for at least 20 minutes. Be creative with how you do it. Take turns reading, use silly voices, try new books, anything to make it fun! I want to make sure this is not a challenge for you at home. Please let me know how I can help.

Homework Policy
I will not typically ask students to do homework. Occasionally, there will be projects that need some home support and practice. If you are looking for more home practice, you can look at the resources tab on this blog. It has some great places to learn how to extend learning and practice at home.

On the other side of struggle is success!
Kids are exploring, learning, and growing every single day. Part of this adventure includes the potential for struggle. I hope to show your child this year that struggle doesn't have to produce stress or be scary. Struggle can offer us the chance to learn and grow in really authentic ways. It is normal and natural to be emotionally challenged by things that are not easy for us. You will encounter this at home, as you work together on projects and other kinds of work. Try to always remember to slow down, really check to see that you and your child understand what you are working at, and let them try. Don't take over for them. Allow them to safely struggle and DO help when they ask but let them really try first. Your child will develop his/her ability to use strategies and resources to overcome obstacles. It will happen before your very eyes. Success is on the other side of struggle. If at any time you and your child are battling about work at home, please reach out to me for ideas and strategies that can work. I am here to help!
